The major competitors of Schindler

While it is of course important to be familiar with Schindler and its core business and main sources of revenue, it is equally important to know the business and industry environment. In other words, you need to know who Schindler's main competitors are in the industry. While these competitors are actually few in number, their news can influence Schindler's stock. Here are the three main competitors:

Otis Elevator Company

This American company specialises in the manufacture of lifts, a segment in which it is currently the world leader. It also produces escalators under the name Escalator, a segment in which it is the world's number two. The company was founded in 1853 in Yonkers and was subsequently acquired by the United Technologies group in 1976. Jesse W Reno invented the Escalator under a different name before the trademark became a generic term.

Kone

This Finnish company, whose name means "machine", is also a company specialising in lifts, escalators and automatic doors. The group employs more than 55,000 people and operates in some 60 countries. Its turnover amounts to several billion euros each year. In addition to its core business, the Kone Group offers installation, maintenance and modernisation services for lifts, escalators and automatic doors for buildings. To carry out its operations, Kone has 8 production units spread over the main world markets and 7 research and development centres. The company's head office is located in the Kone Tower in Espoo, Finland.

ThyssenKrupp AG

Finally, Schindler's third and last competitor is the ThyssenKrupp Group, which is a German steel group officially created in 1999 as a result of the merger of Friedrich Krupp AG Hoesch-Krupp and Thyssen AG. The company has subsidiaries on different continents and its headquarters are located in Essen and Duisburg. Its former headquarters were in Düsseldorf. ThyssenKrupp currently employs 100,000 people and has a total of six divisions

The major partners of Schindler

As we have just seen, the Schindler Holding Group is currently facing some major competitors in its sector of activity, and is also regularly setting up certain strategic partnerships with other large companies. To better understand the possible impact of this type of alliance, we propose to discover here three recent examples of strategic partnerships:

Huawei

Recently, at the annual Huawei Connect trade fair in Shanghai, the Chinese IT giant announced a strategic partnership with Schindler. This is one of many vertical strategy alliances in the field of the Internet of Things and the Cloud. The aim of this partnership is to optimise the use of lifts, facilitate their maintenance and also anticipate possible problems. Huawei is thus promoting the Internet of Things with the cloud, i.e. intelligent lifts. It should be remembered that the complexity of lifts requires the installation of numerous sensors, many of which are located only on the doors. Schindler, as a specialist in lifts, escalators and moving walks, is also convinced of this development and has previously signed an agreement with General Electric Digital with the aim of connecting one million lifts, escalators and moving walks to the industrial Internet with the Predix solution, which is a software and analytical platform from General Electric in the cloud.

Renault

Another strategic partnership, this time in the automotive sector, was announced at the Geneva Motor Show. A memorandum of understanding was signed between Schindler and the car manufacturer Renault in the context of zero-emission mobility. The two companies have already been partners since 2002, but will now strengthen their collaboration through a new memorandum of understanding signed between Jürgen Tinggren, president of Schindler's lift and escalator division, and Patrick Pélata, deputy managing director of operations at Renault SAS. Schindler is thus showing an interest in purchasing or leasing electric vehicles from the future Renault range. But this partnership will not be limited to a simple manufacturer-customer relationship, as Schindler will be part of a pilot group that will test Renault's first zero-emission vehicles at the end of this year. These tests will help Schindler to better understand the future use of electric vehicles by its customers and thus to adjust its offer for corporate fleets.

Microsoft

Finally, the last important strategic partnership that Schindler has put in place recently is with Microsoft and more specifically with the group's subsidiary BuildingMinds. This subsidiary is a start-up dedicated to the digital management of the real estate sector and will allow Schindler to maintain an entrepreneurial approach by encouraging the stimulation of new ideas through the allocation of time to its employees who can bring their field experience to bear.
