The major competitors of Rivian

We now propose to tell you a little more about the environment in which the Rivian Automotive Group operates and about its main competitors in its sector of activity. Here is a quick overview of the major competitors that the group faces in the market today:

Tesla Inc

First of all, we must of course take into account the giant of this sector, the Tesla Group, which is an electric car manufacturer based in Texas in the United States. Founded in 2003, this company, managed by Elon Musk, is a manufacturer that combines innovation and quality in the service of the general public and intends to accelerate the global transition towards a sustainable energy scheme by stimulating, in particular, the competitiveness of electrically powered cars. Recently, the group has also diversified into energy solutions in the form of stationary batteries called powerall for the residential sector and powerpack for the industrial sector. Following a merger with SolarCity, it now also offers photovoltaic panels.

Lucid Motors

This other electric vehicle manufacturer is also based in the US and has presented its first model vehicle which started production in 2021. Pre-orders for this vehicle were launched in Europe in 2020 for its Lucid Air, which is produced from the second half of 2021 in a factory based in Arizona.

Nio

This other competitor of Rivian Automotive is a Chinese car manufacturer that specialises in the development and production of electric vehicles and was established in 2014. Following the launch of Nio, several large companies have made investments in the company including Tencent Group, Temasek, Baidu, Sequoia, Lenovo and TPG.

Byton

Finally, the Chinese car manufacturer Byton was established in 2018 and is based in Nanjing, China. It also has offices in Munich, Germany and Santa Clara, USA. Byton has recruited some big names in the automotive industry in order to build its team including Carsten Breitfiled who is the president of the brand and who designed the BMW i8, Benoit Jacob, a former BMW employee, Tom Wessner who worked at Tesla and Faraday Future and David Twohig who is the chief engineer of the Alpine A110. This company is currently funded by Tencent Holding.

The major partners of Rivian

Of course, the Rivian Group does not only have rivals in its market, but it can also count on certain partners as it regularly sets up strategic partnerships with other companies. Here are two recent examples:

Ford

In 2020, the two companies announced a $500 million partnership to develop a jointly imagined vehicle that could be the SUV of the future. The idea was to borrow Rivian's platform to design an electric vehicle launched under the Lincoln brand. However, in 2021, the two companies finally decided to put an end to this agreement and abandon the project, causing a sudden drop in their respective share prices.

Amazon

Previously, it was with the Amazon group that Rivian signed a major strategic partnership. The latter was in fact a fund-raising operation in which Amazon participated, as did Ford and T Row Price. This fundraising enabled Rivian to finance the opening of a second factory in the United States. Several other states have also expressed their desire to welcome this recent car manufacturer, which also wants to set up in Europe. This second factory of the group will be called Project Tera internally and should soon be made official as the group wishes to start the construction of this site very quickly.
