CAC 40 stock returns and dividends in 2022

A record year for CAC 40 shareholders:

In 2022, the 40 largest French listed companies distributed an unprecedented €80 billion in dividends to their shareholders. This information was communicated by the specialised newsletter Vernimmen, which estimated this sum. This is an all-time record for CAC 40 companies, and includes approximately €56 billion in dividends, which is the portion of profits that companies have chosen to allocate to their shareholders, who are the owners of the company.
In addition, companies also bought back almost €24 billion worth of shares. This practice also redistributes money to shareholders, as share buybacks reduce the number of shares outstanding, which means that each shareholder has a larger stake in the company. The large amounts of dividends and share buybacks can be explained by the resilience of growth, particularly in successful sectors such as luxury, aerospace and energy. Indeed, this has led companies to reassure their shareholders worried about the stock market falling by 9.5% in 2022.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dividend?

A dividend on a share is an amount paid to the shareholder who holds that share. Each share held entitles the holder to this amount, which is paid directly into the investor's account, usually once a year. The dividend is also the share of the profits made by the listed company to its shareholders. The dividend can be fixed but it usually varies from year to year depending on the growth of the company.

What is the difference between a dividend and a yield?

While the dividend is the amount that a company's shareholders will receive in exchange for holding their shares, the yield expresses the profitability of these shares in relation to the dividend. More precisely, it corresponds to the part of the share price that the dividend represents and is expressed as a percentage. Thus, to evaluate the interest of holding a stock in the stock market in one's portfolio, it is better to study the yield than the dividend alone.

Who can receive a dividend from CAC 40 companies?

In order to benefit from the remuneration offered by CAC 40 shares and to receive a dividend, you must first of all be a shareholder in these companies. This means that you must hold shares in this company in your PEA or securities account, at the latest the day before the coupon detachment date.
